Eliminating emissions from ship engines at the Port of Dunkirk

A strong commitment to developing more environmentally friendly port infrastructures starting with the Port of Dunkirk.

Actemium Brest & Boulogne designed and supplied a ‘Cold Ironing System’ integrated into six forty-foot containers allowing the conversion of the public power supply. With a capacity of 8 MW, equivalent to the power supply of nearly 1,000 homes, this system is one of the most powerful ever installed in Europe. The “Cold Ironing” or dockside electrical connection, allows container ships on port calls to switch off their auxiliary motors while covering their energy needs; including maintaining the controlled temperature of the reefer containers. This innovative technology generates significant environmental gains, including:

  • The complete elimination of emissions like sulfur oxides, nitrogen oxides, and fine particles while the vessel is at the dock.
  • A significant reduction in noise pollution.

The electrical connection system installed at Flanders Terminal was inaugurated on January 8th, 2020.
