When robotics becomes the operator’s ally
“No employees enjoy putting compartments together in a manual assembly line, it is often difficult and time-consuming,” says Andreas Zitzer, head of the Schnellecke BU in Soltau.
Nonetheless, the compartments are essential to their business. They individually pack vehicle parts for shipment to China and Mexico to avoid high import duties. The compartments are made of cardboard combs that are inserted into each other to form transport cells to protect parts during delivery.
Actemium Trappes designed, manufactured and commissioned a pilot project, “the compartment insertion robot”, for Schnellecke Logistics which was integrated into their daily operational systems to relieve this process for employees. This robot needs a complete infrastructure from the feeding of the compartment combs to sensors and dispatch, therefore a conveyor technology and visual recognition capabilities were applied to the robot.
